Type 2 Diabetes Diet vicious circle. You feel rotten. You want comfort food (mostly sugar and processed flour – cake, candy, pie, ice cream, pizza). Quick sugar rush. Feel good for an hour. Crash and burn. The cycle repeats. How can a diabetic break the cycle?Problem #1: Medical professionals are not in agreement as to what causes diabetes. As a type II diabetic, I basically know what I should be eating and what I should be avoiding or eliminating from my diet. A type 2 diabetes diet is not rocket science. Eat real food. Get adequate protein. Avoid processed wheat, sugar, and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Simple. And exercise. Couch potatoes are at even higher risk.Life has told you to eat your vegetables. I don’t really hate vegetables, but I don’t seek them out at the buffet table either. To me, the only vegetable I want to consume is V8 Juice. If I could, I would have a V8 tree out back and harvest 2 or 3 cans a day.Real reasons diabetics hate dietary restrictions:1. Force. We’re adults, dammit. We should be able to do and eat what we want.2. Even if I didn’t have diabetes, I don’t want to diet. Each new fad and food pyramid and hormone injection seems sillier than the previous ones. If diets worked, the diet book section at Barnes and Noble would have 1 volume.3. People often consume things that are not good for them. Beer. Bourbon. Cigarettes. How bad can a slice and a Coke be?4. The foods we crave and which we now have to avoid are the ones that brought on the disease in the first place. 5. Chicken or the egg. If I didn’t crave Edy’s Girl Scout Thin Mint Cookie ice cream, and didn’t develop diabetes, I could eat all of it that I want. Now that I want it, I can’t have it.6. Jonesing for sugar. If they invent pizza with an apple pie topping, I’m in. For most of my life, sugar was a major food group.7. Conflicting medical information. Coffee is not okay, or maybe it is if you drink it black. Fruit is okay one day and too high in sugar the next. Avoid all sugar, or have small portions of anything you want. Eat less animal fat, but get your protein.Doctors – get the answers straight before you hit the Today show. If you don’t have an answer, how can we.In actuality, many type II diabetics can make it on a diet doctors recommend for everyone, especially our obese Americans on the SAD (Standard American Diet) diet.-low fat-low sugar-low salt-plenty of fruits and vegetables-whole grains, beans, potatoesYou have to experiment for yourself. An inexpensive blood testing meter will let you know if it’s time to have a glass of water and a handful of almonds to get that blood sugar down. Work with your doctor to develop a plan for diet and medication. Doctors may be heavily influenced by the pharmaceutical companies, but they are even more dependent on trust from their patients. I personally believe that a type 2 diabetes diet of lean meat, fish, whole foods, fruits, and vegetables can not only keep diabetes in check while also reducing obesity and lowering the risk of heart disease, strokes, and dementia.

“Too many people confine their exercise to jumping to conclusions, running up bills, stretching the truth, bending over backward, lying down on the job, sidestepping responsibility, and pushing their luck.”

Nobody takes credit for that statement, but it is true; and for diabetics, the part about pushing their luck is especially true if they don’t engage in regular PHYSICAL exercise.

Health professionals everywhere say that physical exercise is vital to good health. Even a perfectly healthy body will not function properly without regular physical exercise, and if that body has diabetes, exercise becomes doubly important.

Regular physical exercise can do several things for those who have diabetes:

* Exercise will lower blood sugar! Did you know that exercising before eating can regulate blood sugar levels as much as most blood-sugar-lowering drugs? It’s true. Research proves it!

* Exercise can help prevent heart disease! High blood pressure and high cholesterol lead to heart disease for everyone, and diabetics are particularly susceptible.

* Exercise can help control weight for diabetics! It’s true. Just regular exercise can do as much for helping diabetics control their weight as diet. The exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous to be effective. Simply walking 20 minutes every single day will do the trick.

Diabetics should, of course, follow their doctor’s recommendations about the intensity and frequency of exercise. Blood sugar levels most certainly matter! But being diabetic is not an excuse to avoid physical exercise.

Diabetics need to be especially careful to look for the signs of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level) while they are exercising. Hypoglycemia doesn’t happen all at one time. There are physical signs that the blood sugar level is getting too low, and diabetics need to be aware of those signs so that they can take action to prevent serious problems.

Should diabetics take vitamins? In a word, YES. Taking a multivitamin/multimineral supplement every day is good for almost everybody on the planet.

The question of whether vitamin supplements can actually help diabetics with the diabetes is another question altogether, and the answer isn’t quite as simple.

Studies have, of course, been conducted concerning the effect that various vitamins and minerals have on diabetes. Most of those studies were either inconclusive or proved that particular vitamins and/or minerals had no effect on the disease at all.

There are exceptions. High-quality B-complex vitamin compounds have shown promising affects on diabetic neuropathy. Diabetic neuropathy is a peripheral nerve disorder that can cause numbness, tingling, and pain in the legs and feet.

The fact is that diabetics must live on restricted diets. Because diets are restricted, very often diabetics don’t get the proper nutrients through the food they eat. So vitamin and mineral supplements are recommended by their doctors.

The vitamin and mineral supplements that are most often recommended by doctors to their diabetic patients are:

Chromium: helps to lower insulin levels, decrease fasting glucose levels, and increase glucose tolerance.

Manganese: is an important factor in the key enzymes of glucose metabolism.

Magnesium: generally impacts the glucose levels.

Vitamin E: improves insulin activity and is a powerful antioxidant. Studies have shown that higher levels of Vitamin E help to improve the glucose tolerance of Type 2 diabetics.

Vitamin C: helps to lower sorbitol levels in diabetics.

Vitamins B6 and B12 and Biotin: B-complex vitamins have been proven to have positive effects on diabetic neuropathy.

Vanadium: increases insulin sensitivity and decreases the needed amount of insulin required.

Inositol: is needed to maintain healthy nerve function.

Before you begin any vitamin/mineral nutritional supplement program, be sure to discuss it with your doctor.
