healall.info Signs and symptoms ================== The classical triad of diabetes symptoms is polyuria, polydipsia and polyphagia, which are, respectively, frequent urination; increased thirst and consequent increased fluid intake; and increased appetite. Symptoms may develop quite rapidly (weeks or months) in type 1 diabetes, particularly in children. However, in type 2 diabetes the symptoms develop much more slowly and may be subtle or completely absent. Type 1 diabetes may also cause a rapid yet significant weight loss (despite normal or even increased eating) and irreducible fatigue. All of these symptoms except weight loss can also manifest in type 2 diabetes in patients whose diabetes is poorly controlled. When the glucose concentration in the blood is raised beyond the renal threshold, reabsorption of glucose in the proximal renal tubuli is incomplete, and part of the glucose remains in the urine (glycosuria). This increases the osmotic pressure of the urine and inhibits the reabsorption of water by the kidney, resulting in increased urine production (polyuria) and increased fluid loss. Lost blood volume will be replaced osmotically from water held in body cells, causing dehydration and increased thirst. Prolonged high blood glucose causes glucose absorption, which leads to changes in the shape of the lenses of the eyes, resulting in vision changes. Blurred vision is a common complaint leading to a diabetes diagnosis; type 1 should always be suspected in cases of …

Gestational diabetes is a condition brought about by high blood glucose levels that remain high during pregnancy. The health of the fetus and mother as well as the development of the fetus can be adversely affected by this form of diabetes. Although it seems as if the pregnancy causes the diabetic response in some women there have been studies done which show they may have been predisposed to diabetes as they develop type 2 diabetes later on in life. A gestational diabetes diet plan is critical to properly managing the affects of this disease.Routine screening for gestational diabetes is recommended during the second trimester for all pregnant women to help limit the negative impacts it can have on mother and baby. If it is not controlled it can lead to pregnancy-induced hypertension, premature birth, large fetus size, congenital abnormalities, future obesity and diabetes in the infant, and other birth complications.A gestational diabetes diet requires dietary modifications that the mother may not be used to but to control this form of diabetes it is essential. This is accomplished through individually developed dietary prescriptions based on metabolic nutrition and lifestyle requirements. Basic changes include reduced intake of simple sugars such as white table sugar and syrups. The simple sugars are replaced with more complex carbohydrates with a balanced intake of nutrients, particularly with the carbohydrates, during the day. To make starting this type of gestational diabetes diet plan easier a registered dietician will use exchange lists to make their clients meal planning easier.Exchange lists were first developed for diabetic meal planning but they have become a basic tool for almost all food guides and dietary recommendations.Another system to control diabetes, carbohydrate counting, has recently begun to see more widespread use. This system allows the client to keep track of carbohydrate intake during the course of the day.An overall gestational diabetes diet plan takes into account the physical, psychosocial, and educational requirements. For the woman with this form of diabetes reliance on her health care providers to help manage her condition is vitally important. Her registered dietician has the primary responsibility for developing and teaching her the individualized dietary plan that will work best for her. Nurses at her doctor’s office and in the hospital help reinforce these dietary needs and also are responsible for teaching her how to effectively monitor blood glucose levels and administer insulin if needed. By working together the pregnant woman and her health care team can successfully manage and overcome the risks posed by gestational diabetes.

A healthy diet and regular exercise are essential for your overall health. Many diseases, including diabetes, can be managed successfully with a healthy diet. Since each disease causes different symptoms and your body needs different nutrients to manage the disease, each disease may require a different type of diet. If your body does not properly absorb the sugars you are ingesting, you may need to avoid foods that are starchy and contain a lot of sugar.

Before you begin a diet that is aimed at managing a certain disease, it is important to consult your physician and get a true diagnosis. If your body is actually turning starches and sugars into energy properly, you could risk the chance of denying your body of the necessary foods by decreasing the amount of starch and sugars in your diet. So, be sure to check with your physician, who will go over your symptoms and perform tests to determine the correct diagnosis.

Once you have been diagnosed with diabetes, your diabetes diet will play an important role in the management of the disease. Your diabetes diet does not necessarily restrict the food that you are allowed to consume. Rather the diabetes diet will usually consist of consuming a variety of foods in the correct portions that will allow your body to use the nutrients properly. The two most important aspects of a healthy diet are eating regular meals as closely as possible to the same time each day and eating the right amounts of the healthiest foods. If you are already eating a healthy diet, there may not be many changes. But, if you are not eating a healthy diet or do not eat regular meals at around the same time each day, you may have to make more changes. The key is to become conscious of what your body’s needs are and plan accordingly. Hints for a Successful Diabetes Diet The following hints will give you some idea of what changes you will need to make in your diet to successfully manage diabetes:

For the type 2 diabetic keeping blood pressures under control is a vital part of their diet plan. In recent studies researchers evaluated how a high carbohydrate and high monounsaturated fat diet affected the blood pressure in patients with type 2 diabetes. After 14 weeks they found that those eating the high carb diet had a modest increase in blood pressure as opposed to those who ate a diet high in monounsaturated fat.The diet itself was laid out as follows. The high carbohydrate diet consisted of 55 percent of calories from carbohydrates, 30 percent from fat, and 10 percent monounsaturated fat. The monounsaturated diet had it test subjects eating 40 percent of calories form carbs, 45 percent from fats, and 25 percent from monounsaturated fat. Both groups consumed the same amount of calories, just different percentages from the above food types. The 42 patients in the study consumed each diet for a 6 week period with a break of one week between each test period. After their one week break they were invited to continue with the second part of the diet for 8 more weeks. Eight test subjects continued on the high monosaturated fat diet with thirteen more continuing on the high carbohydrate diet. After the first 6 week period there was little change in both systolic or diastolic blood pressure (upper and lower blood pressure readings), or in heart rate. After the final 8 week period though, researchers began to see some changes. Those who ate the high carbohydrate diet began to see systolic pressures 6 point higher and diastolic pressures were 7 points higher. Their heart rates were also higher by about 7 to 8 beats per minute. Contrast this with those patients on the high monounsaturated fat diet whose systolic and diastolic pressure were 3 to 4 points lower at the end of the 14 week period. This shows that while caloric control is important for the diabetic where those calories come from may be of even more importance. A diabetic diet low carb choice may help type 2 diabetics with blood pressure problems but it is important to discuss any dietary changes with your doctor or nutritionist.

Type 2 Diabetes Diet vicious circle. You feel rotten. You want comfort food (mostly sugar and processed flour – cake, candy, pie, ice cream, pizza). Quick sugar rush. Feel good for an hour. Crash and burn. The cycle repeats. How can a diabetic break the cycle?Problem #1: Medical professionals are not in agreement as to what causes diabetes. As a type II diabetic, I basically know what I should be eating and what I should be avoiding or eliminating from my diet. A type 2 diabetes diet is not rocket science. Eat real food. Get adequate protein. Avoid processed wheat, sugar, and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Simple. And exercise. Couch potatoes are at even higher risk.Life has told you to eat your vegetables. I don’t really hate vegetables, but I don’t seek them out at the buffet table either. To me, the only vegetable I want to consume is V8 Juice. If I could, I would have a V8 tree out back and harvest 2 or 3 cans a day.Real reasons diabetics hate dietary restrictions:1. Force. We’re adults, dammit. We should be able to do and eat what we want.2. Even if I didn’t have diabetes, I don’t want to diet. Each new fad and food pyramid and hormone injection seems sillier than the previous ones. If diets worked, the diet book section at Barnes and Noble would have 1 volume.3. People often consume things that are not good for them. Beer. Bourbon. Cigarettes. How bad can a slice and a Coke be?4. The foods we crave and which we now have to avoid are the ones that brought on the disease in the first place. 5. Chicken or the egg. If I didn’t crave Edy’s Girl Scout Thin Mint Cookie ice cream, and didn’t develop diabetes, I could eat all of it that I want. Now that I want it, I can’t have it.6. Jonesing for sugar. If they invent pizza with an apple pie topping, I’m in. For most of my life, sugar was a major food group.7. Conflicting medical information. Coffee is not okay, or maybe it is if you drink it black. Fruit is okay one day and too high in sugar the next. Avoid all sugar, or have small portions of anything you want. Eat less animal fat, but get your protein.Doctors – get the answers straight before you hit the Today show. If you don’t have an answer, how can we.In actuality, many type II diabetics can make it on a diet doctors recommend for everyone, especially our obese Americans on the SAD (Standard American Diet) diet.-low fat-low sugar-low salt-plenty of fruits and vegetables-whole grains, beans, potatoesYou have to experiment for yourself. An inexpensive blood testing meter will let you know if it’s time to have a glass of water and a handful of almonds to get that blood sugar down. Work with your doctor to develop a plan for diet and medication. Doctors may be heavily influenced by the pharmaceutical companies, but they are even more dependent on trust from their patients. I personally believe that a type 2 diabetes diet of lean meat, fish, whole foods, fruits, and vegetables can not only keep diabetes in check while also reducing obesity and lowering the risk of heart disease, strokes, and dementia.

Based on statistics, 3 percent to 5 percent of pregnant women suffer gestational diabetes. This type of diabetes is related to the insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes as far as the need for proper diet and exercise is concerned. Due to her pregnancy, the pregnant woman is less mindful of her dietary intakes and has more tendencies to be inactive owing to her condition. It simply means that a well-placed gestational diabetes diet plan should be on hand to prevent this disease from developing. On 5th to 6th month of pregnancy, the placenta generates a lot of hormones which block the functions of insulin. More hormones are produced when the placenta becomes bigger resulting to more blockage and greater insulin resistance. When the insulin could no longer neutralize the placenta hormones, this gives rise to gestational diabetes. In some cases, other causes of gestational diabetes can be related to family history of diabetes, obesity, previous delivery with birth defect, previously giving birth to a large infant, or having too much amniotic fluid (a slight yellowish fluid that covers the fetus). Gestational diabetes disappears upon giving birth since the placenta is already removed. However, 40 percent of these women are likely to develop type 2 diabetes. The need for a gestational diabetes plan is important because an uncontrolled blood sugar level can lead to the incidence of birth defect or miscarriage. Some may even require insulin injection but are never prescribed with oral medication to preclude any unknown side effects. It is important that the diet plan be created with the gestational diabetic patient in mind. This should be a well-balanced diet to support the pregnancy of gestational diabetic women. Care should be given not to include a drastic reduction of carbohydrate intakes since this will prove to be an unhealthy practice for pregnant women. In view of this, hereunder are the do’s and dont’s to be observed in formulating a gestational diabetes diet plan: Proper Gestational Diabetes Foods 1. Small breakfast that includes protein foods like eggs, skinned chicken, brown bread with peanut butter or lentil broth.2. Small meals after 3 to 4 hours comprising of high protein products, e.g. skinned fish, low fat meat, eggs, nuts, cottage cheese, peanut butter etc.3. Fruits, green and leafy vegetables; fruits should be eaten only during lunch or dinner but never at breakfast.4. Milk low in fat or skim the milk before drinking. Improper Gestational Diabetes Foods 1. Sugar, sweetener and sweets; Examples are chocolates, pies, cakes, pastries, cookies, soft drinks, marmalade, cookies, jam, fruit juice, table sugar, honey, molasses corn syrup and cornstarch.2. Junk foods and packaged meals such as burgers, instant noodles, hot dogs, potato crisps, French fries, frozen foods, canned fish and canned soups.3. Fatty and deep fried foods; Instead of using cooking oil, try to bake, steam, grill or boil. Grilled lean meat and fish are good but not pork.4. Butter, cheese, mayonnaise, thick cream, sour cream and margarine. The best gestational diabetes diet plan your dietitian can come up with is one that is done with proper consultation with your doctor. The above food groups merely serve as reference because there is no universal diet plan for gestational diabetes.

Alvin Hopkinson is a leading health researcher in the area of natural remedies and diabetes natural treatment.

Diabetes Diet

There is no such thing as a “diabetic diet.”

A balanced diet is recommended. All foods cause a varying insulin response in our bodies. Eat plenty of foods such as green vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and fibre that influence the release of sugar into the bloodstream. Foods that should be avoided are refined sugar, processed food, junk food, pastries, and cookies.

When checking labels, watch out for hidden forms of sugar, such as dextrose, glucose, sucrose, corn sweeteners, fructose, dextrin, lactose, maltose, malt, fruit juice concentrate.

Protein snacks should be eaten in between meals.

Alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine should be avoided.

Foods that are high on the “glycemic index” cause the blood sugar level to rise quickly, than those with a lower rating. Essentially, the glycaemic index is based on how quickly a particular food is digested, metabolized and then released into the bloodstream as glucose.

Higher glycemic index foods are white bread, sweets, packaged foods, pastries, frozen desserts, dried fruit, whole milk, burgers. Lower glycemic index foods are most vegetables, leafy greens, 100% whole grain bread, skim milk, buttermilk, chicken, fish, and many nuts. Many factors go on to influence the glycemic index of a food, such as preparation and consumption method.

Tips for planning a healthy diet for a diabetic patient:

·	Eat a variety of foods – A platter of different-coloured foods give you nutrition from all the food groups. Include more of high-fibre foods, such as fruits, leafy green vegetables, and whole grains.

·	Limit salt intake – which affects blood pressure. Avoid packaged snack foods, chips, pickles. Sodium intake of no more than 3000 mg per day is suggested. For people with high blood pressure, sodium should be limited to 2400 mg per day or as advised by a physician.

·	Avoid saturated fats – like butter, ghee, and cheese. They increase “bad” (LDL) cholesterol. Instead, go for good fats, like omega-3 fats in fish, and vegetable oils made from plants such as groundnut oil, safflower oil etc.

·	Eat good quantity of fibre – Rich sources of fibre are whole wheat breads, high-fibre cereals, green vegetables, and fibre supplements such as isabgol. Foods with fibre also help one manage blood sugar level as they reduce the need for insulin and also lower the level of fats in the blood.

·	Fix up on portions you eat -. Eat about the same amount of food each day. Do not keep fluctuating your diet, or the quality of meals.

·	Do not skip meals. Eat small meals about every four to five hours.

·	Eat meals at regular times every day. If you are on a diabetes medicine, eat your meals and take your medicine about the same time each day.

·	Include in your diet all foods which you like to eat. Even sweets can be eaten occasionally in moderate amounts. If your diet includes foods that you dislike, or if something you like eating is left out, you’re less likely to continue with the meal plan.

A simple diet plan -

A proper diet for a diabetic patient is one that is low in fat and simple sugars, and high in fibre and complex carbohydrates, so that it helps balance the blood sugar and control weight. The goal of a diabetes nutrition plan is to provide a mixture of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins at each meal at an appropriate calorie level to provide both essential nutrients as well as create a smooth release of glucose into the blood.

Choose a diet so that the approximate calories from the various components of the food is as follows:

Proteins – 20 percent

Fats – 20 percent

Carbohydrates – 60 percent

«	Diabetics should fill up on leafy vegetables, bitter gourd (karela), papaya, oranges, lentils, legumes with strings and skin intact, whole grain cereals, pulses, sprouted moong, and 10 to 20 grams of guar ki phali (from cluster beans).

«	Eat apples and other fruits which are high in pectin. One can go for a midmorning and afternoon snack of fruit such as apple to keep blood sugar stable.

«	Get protein mostly from vegetable sources, such as grains and legumes. Fish and low-fat dairy products (buttermilk, low fat yoghurt, skimmed milk) are also acceptable sources of protein. Try and avoid fatty meat.

«	Eat more carbohydrates.

«	Do not take large doses of vitamins B1 (thiamine), B3 and C, as excessive amounts may inactivate the insulin. These vitamins should, however, be taken in normal amounts.

Being recommended a diabetic diet is nothing to be frightened of. It is neither a torture nor a nightmare; a little bit of planning and one can make it into a much-looked forward meal. So if diagnosed with diabetes, take it in your daily routine and just pay a little more attention to your diet from now on!!!

Remember, what causes diabetes mellitus is poor dieting and sedentary living year after year.

Gestational diabetes symptoms often go unnoticed or are not thought to be unusual given that the individual is pregnant. Most frequently, gestational diabetes symptoms include being very thirsty and having to pee many times every day. Many women just consider this a natural part of pregnancy and pay it no mind. However, if the thirst is a result of elevated blood-glucose levels, then the developing baby is put at risk if the symptoms are not controlled.

The excess glucose in the mother’s bloodstream can pass through the placental wall and enter into the developing baby.

If you’ve recently been diagnosed with diabetes, the doctor informed you that you’d need to make adjustments to your diet. Understanding what is entailed in a diabetes diet will go a long way to reassuring patients that they can maintain the normal, healthy lifestyle that they’re used to.
It’s natural for many people to believe that they’ll never be able to eat anything good again and that their diet will be bland and unappealing, but such is not the case with a diabetes diet. Education is the key to understanding how your body uses the food you eat, how that food is digested, and fats, carbohydrates and proteins relegated to perform various tasks and chores within your body systems. Many diabetics believe that they’ll never be able to eat sugar again, but this is far from the truth.
Sure, eating a piece of cake or cookies made with sugar will raise blood sugar levels. But did you know that sugar is also found in tomatoes and corn on the cob? A diabetes diet is not much different than the kind of normal, pyramid shaped nutrition diet that many people maintain on a daily basis.
Sugars should always be ingested in moderation, whether you’re on a normal or a diabetes diet. Maintaining a healthy weight is also important, not only to reduce the chances of developing diabetic, but also to enjoy as healthy of lifestyle as possible after being diagnosed. A diabetes diet has other benefits other than keeping blood sugar levels at acceptable levels; it helps prevent cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure.
Men are especially concerned about restrictions while maintaining a diabetes diet, believing they can never have an alcoholic drink again. But as with desserts and other sugars, moderation is a key factor. Men on a diabetic diet are allowed two drinks a day, while women are allowed one. First however, make sure that any medications you take don’t require total abstinence of alcohol.
Many people on a diabetes diet believe that their glucose levels will be easier to maintain if they eat the same thing every day, but this option is neither exciting nor nutritious. People on a diabetes diet should avoid taking extra vitamins and minerals, as these may throw chemical balances within your body out of kilter. Eating a well-balanced diabetes diet should provide you with adequate amounts of these.
A diabetes diet meal plan doesn’t have to be bland or boring. A registered dietician will help you get started in the right direction soon after you’re diagnosed with diabetes, offering suggestions on menu planning and food selection choices. Your diet will also be determined by such factors as whether you need insulin injections or take other oral medications. The bottom line is that people with diabetes that maintain a diabetes diet can eat and enjoy the same foods as other family members. A little extra planning and thought may go into a diabetes diet meal-planning process, but you can continue to eat your favorite foods in moderation.

Diabetic diet plan is very important for a person with diabetes. This is a type of diet that makes sure that the person is under control as for this sugar levels in the body is concerned. Diabetes diet is very helpful in maintaining glucose levels in the body.

Diabetes is a common disease. Most people across the globe are suffering from this disease. If not given proper attention and care, especially on the diet one takes, this disease can prove to be really dangerous.

Since diabetes is a chronic disease, it does not have any permanent cure. However, with proper care and treatment, one can expect to live a long and happy life with this disease.

It is very necessary for a person to follow diabetes diet in order to maintain a healthy body. Most experts believe that there are certain specific nutrition guidelines one needs to follow with diabetes.

A) Here are some guidelines on the primary elements you require to include in a diabetes diet:

a)	Proteins

Proteins are important to supply amino acids. Amino acids are really important for the process of tissue repair and also to maintain the levels of glucose during the process of absorption. These contain less amount of calories as compared to the fats.

b)	Carbohydrates

These are very important to prevent ketosis.

c)	Fats

One must focus on foods rich in saturated fats. Cholesterol should be completely avoided.

d)	Fiber

It is important to reduce the glucose absorption rate. Fiber works towards facilitating urinary glucose excretion, stomach emptyfying process, reduction of blood sugar rise and delay in the intestinal passage time.

B) Remember that your diabetes diet should be completely devoid of the following food elements:

a)	Potatoes, Sweet potatoes

b)	Sugar, Glucose, Jams

c)	Jaggery, Honey, Sweets

d)	Fried foods

e)	Mango, Banana, Chickoo, Custard apple

f)	A lot of oil or fat

Try to include a lot of fresh leafy green vegetables and salads in your food.

C) Following a diabetic diet has a lot of benefits. Here are some of the benefits you can enjoy via following a diabetic diet religiously:

a)	Benefit 1

It keeps a stable blood glucose level.

b)	Benefit 2

It reduces the amount of insulin required in the body. Carbohydrates and lean meals will help you in this process.

c)	Benefit 3

Better feeling of well being is another primary benefit of following a diabetic diet. Most people who do not strict to this diet tend to over eat and eat the wrong kind of food. This raises their blood sugar level and result in fatigue and general feeling of being unwell. A diabetic diet helps you feel unhealthy.

d)	Benefit 4

Following a strict diabetic diet will not allow you to overeat and eating food that can make you gain weight. This results in keeping your body weight under control. This also reduces the risk of developing other health problems such as stroke and heart disease.

Following a diabetic diet has a lot of benefits than just controlling your blood sugar levels. Experts suggest that you should focus on a lot of exercises and have an active life in order to get benefited in the right way.
