If you are one of the millions of people with symptoms of diabetes, it will be in your best interest to have a diabetes test performed to see if you have become afflicted with the ailment. There are currently two different tests to determine the amount of sugar in the blood, but the preferred diabetes test is the fasting plasma glucose test, in which the blood glucose level is measured. A person being treated for diabetes checks their blood sugar level several times a day, but this test should not be used for diagnostic purposes.

The blood sugar tests conducted at home will give a reading of the sugar level at that specific time. The amount of sugar will change throughout the day, typically going higher after eating. The fasting plasma glucose diabetes test can measure the amount of the glucose in the blood over a period of up to three months. This lets the doctor know how high the glucose level has been for the past 30 to 60 days, and not just that day.

Results of the fasting glucose diabetes test resulting in a reading of between 80 and 110 are considered normal. A reading between 110 and 125 is considered at risk for developing diabetes and a reading over 125 indicates a person has diabetes.

Importance Of Fasting Before Test

When scheduled for the fasting plasma glucose diabetes test it is important to follow the directions to obtain an accurate reading of the blood glucose levels. Some foods enter the blood stream faster than other foods and if the person eats or drinks something that metabolizes into sugar quickly, it will throw off the results of the diabetes test. Accuracy is important so the doctor can prescribe the right medications to help maintain a health blood glucose level.

The most common form of diabetes, Type 2, or adult onset diabetes can usually be controlled with oral medications. Typically the patient has lost the ability to produce insulin to help wash glucose through the blood stream or the insulin being produce is unable to break down the sugar. Taking a diabetes test when the usual symptoms appear can assure the patient gets the needed treatment.

Symptoms, other than family history include constant thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision and can also include constantly feeling tired. With a family history of the ailment, your doctor will probably order a diabetes test to determine if it is present.

Once a person has been diagnosed with diabetes, treatment will usually begin with oral medication. Typically, doctors will prescribe medication that tells the body to produce more insulin, while suggesting a diet low in sugar and low in carbohydrates. In the early stages of diabetes, treatment usually involves weight loss, if applicable, diet and effective physical activity. If these steps do not reduce the blood glucose level, medication is usually the next step in treatment.

The doctor will take an active interest in controlling the patient’s diabetes, but there are a few methods of diabetes treatment the patient can do on their own to help with their management of the disease. Monitoring blood sugar is an important part of diabetes treatment as it can indicate if a change in medication is needed, or perhaps an adjustment of the dosage is necessary. Exercise will help the body metabolize the sugar in the system more quickly as well as help with weight control and increase the good cholesterol levels.

Controlling stress is also a part of diabetes treatment for many patients and although some types of stress may be good for many people, learning how to deal with the stresses of life can improve overall health. A proper diet will also be part of the treatment, reducing the amount of sugar found in processed foods will be part of the plan.

Diet Is Important Part Of Treatment Plan

For those diagnosed with diabetes and taking medication to keep it under control, are not doing themselves any good by not following a healthy diet. Many medications are designed to instruct the body to produce more insulin, based on the blood glucose levels found during testing. A major part of diabetes treatment is to not introduce additional sugar into the bloodstream to nullify the effects of the medication.

Simple carbohydrates as well as highly refined foods will quickly break down into sugar in the bloodstream and can cause problems with the diabetes treatment regimen. Complex carbohydrates break down much slower and will be absorbed into the blood at a much safer speed. Less saturated fat should also be part of the diet for diabetes treatment.

Exercise plays a couple of roles in diabetes treatment in that it can help reduce the body’s insulin resistance while helping to increase good cholesterol levels. Exercise is also good for weight reduction and keeping the heart muscle, and others, strong and working well.

Diabetes is a disease that can be traced in the genes of certain families. If you have a family history of diabetes in your family, then you need to be careful and extra vigilant in recognizing the early symptoms of diabetes. Being able to catch the early symptoms of diabetes can decide whether your diabetes is severe or manageable with just medications and a strict diet.

There are races which are more prone to diabetes compared to others. This who have traces of Native American, African American, Latino and Pacific Islander heritage are prone to diabetes. An individual’s weight, lifestyle, age and genes are among the factors which can trigger diabetes in an individual. A family history of diabetes can be the reason why many people always have check ups to see if their body is functioning as it should be.

Several Early Symptoms Of Diabetes To Watch Out For

Among the many early symptoms of diabetes is blurry vision, frequent urination, increased feeling of fatigue, extreme hunger, irritability, excessive thirst and sudden weight loss. These early symptoms of diabetes need to be recognized as soon as possible before the individual goes from pre-diabetes stage to full diabetes.

Other early symptoms of diabetes are frequent skin infections or yeast infections. Since yeast p[refer to grow on sugar, it is understandable that these will occur on a person who is secreting basically sweet urine and sweat. People who may have diabetes also feel sleepy or tired most of the time. When they sit down to watch TV or read, they tend to fall asleep quite readily.

The early symptoms of diabetes are godsends that help us to know that we have the disease. Without these early symptoms of diabetes we will surely develop full blown diabetes without us knowing a thing. That is why it is important to be vigilant and observant regarding changes in our bodily functions and lifestyle. It is better to avoid eating too much food with carbohydrates in order not to increase your risk of diabetes.

What To Do If You Suspect You Have Diabetes

If you suspect you are experiencing early symptoms of diabetes, go to your medical practitioner to have a blood chemistry done on you. This is one easy way to know if you have the disease or not. It will also help to discover if you have any other underlying diseases. Your doctor can help to diagnose your symptoms and give you professional help, if necessary.

The Atkins Diet caused quite a stir in the diet world when it first came out. The first book published by Dr. Robert Atkins was published in 1972 and was entitled “Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution.” It advocated a completely different approach to weight loss. Rather than advocating the avoidance of meats and fats, the Atkins Diet promoted eating meats and fats — lots and lots of meats, meat products, and fats — while avoiding such things as fruits and vegetables. The idea flew in the face of accepted diet concepts of the time.

But the Atkins Diet was popular. It was popular because it worked. People could eat a lot and still lose weight. It was a dieter’s dream come true — for a while. Well-known doctors began to publish papers about the dangers of the Atkins Diet. They said that it would promote high cholesterol and high blood pressure followed closely by strokes, heart disease, and death.

The battle raged on! It’s been raging on for the last three decades.

The American Heart Association still doesn’t think much of the Atkins Diet. In 2006 a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine said that “women reduced heart disease risk by eating more protein and fat from vegetable sources.” The conclusion was that the Atkins Diet and others like it were detrimental to women’s health.

Those who rage against the Atkins Diet say that the initial weight loss produced when a person starts the Atkins Diet is a diet phenomenon that is common to all weight loss diets and means nothing.

Most people (especially those who have never actually read one of Dr. Atkins’s books) think that going on the Atkins Diet gives them license to gorge themselves on red meat and fat. This assumption is NOT correct.

Collette Heimowitz, the director of research and education for Atkins Nutritionals, has said, “The media and opponents of Atkins often sensationalize and simplify the diet as the all-the-steak-you-can-eat diet. This has never been true.”

Reality TV programs are popping up everywhere. It started with “Survivor,” but since then reality TV has really branched out. We have regular people (not actors) racing around the world and engaging in all kinds of activities in hopes of winning a million bucks. We have people courting and choosing mates. Reality TV seems limitless. It’s no surprise that weight loss reality TV has made it into American living rooms and dens.

It’s amazing, really. You see people who are grossly overweight set out to lose a lot of weight, and in a relatively short period of time. These “contestants” live in a vacuum that can’t come anywhere close to emulating real people out there in the real world who are dieting and exercising in an effort to lose unwanted pounds.

The “contestants” (I don’t know what else to call them.) are surrounded by doctors, dieticians, fitness instructors, and other professionals 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Professionals are in charge of meal planning, portion control, and exercise regimes.

There have been reports that the TV audience isn’t treated to what REALLY goes on behind the scenes, like vomiting, purging, and use of strong diet suppressants and diuretics. The networks, of course, deny these allegations vigorously.

My main objection to these reality weight loss television programs is that viewers can be “tricked” into believing that they can accomplish the same amazing results at home. They can’t. Those of us who live out here in the “real” world have families, jobs, relationships, and hundreds of other distractions. Nobody prepares our meals for us, and nobody controls portion sizes except us. We don’t have a registered dietician on call. We don’t have a personal trainer that we can depend upon at any hour of the day or night, either.

Things are a bit different out here in the real world, where diet and exercise programs are a lot harder to stick to.

Have you been asking yourself how does the south beach diet work? The good news is that it is really easy to understand. The south beach diet is broken down into three phases to help you better manage the process. This is by far the biggest, newest trend in the health industry and has garnered much attention from celebrities and regular day folk alike. The main reason for this is that it just works. No matter what your body type, age, or weight the south beach diet can work for everyone.. This is why we have put together the following information to help you understand exactly how it works.

For those of you who are completely unfamiliar with this diet and are wondering “how does the south beach diet work?” it is quite simplistic. The basic idea of the diet is to abandon untested methods of weight loss and return to the basics. This is achieved by replacing the bad carbohydrates and fats that you consume with good ones. This process is broken down into three phases (below) that all have their own benefits.

How does the South Beach Diet Work?

Phase #1: The first phase, like the others, is very easy and will not prove to be difficult when trying to transition from your old dietary routine. The first phase consists of three meals a day and will last for two weeks. The types of meals you should be eating include beef, chicken, turkey, fish, shellfish, eggs, cheese, nuts, and lots of vegetables. The meals should be sided with a garden salad using 100% olive oil as a dressing. Unlike other diets, the south beach diet instructs you to eat until you feel full.

Phase #2: Phase two, unlike the first phase, has no set time limit. This means that phase two will last as long as it takes you to lose your desired amount of weight. The main goal of the first phase was to make your body re-learn what foods are good for it as well as starting to phase out the cravings that are associated with some of the sugary foods that you have cut out of your diet. During phase two you will continue the routine from phase one however you can start to have some sugary foods once or twice a week in small portions. By the time phase two is completed you should feel as if you have complete control over your cravings and thus the food you eat.

Phase #3: Phase 3 begins once you have reached your target weight during phase two. Phase 3 will actually become your new diet for the rest of your life. If the first two phases are followed correctly the third phase will just feel like your normal eating habits. No longer should you be wondering “how does the south beach diet work”, instead you’ll be enjoying the benefits of it.

Belly fat! Even the words sound disgusting! Getting six-pack abs is one of the main reasons why people of both sexes go on weight loss diets. The purpose is to look good, fit, and trim during bathing suit season at the beach. Nobody wants belly fat hanging out!

If you want advice about how to lose belly fat, all you have to do is type those words into the search box of your favorite search engine. You’ll get more advice that you can imagine. Most of it isn’t worth the space it takes up in cyberspace, though.

Here’s the thing. You can’t cause fat from a specific part of the body to go first when you are on a weight loss diet. And fat cells NEVER disappear. They can shrink, but they are always there unless you have them surgically removed. Even if you have fat cells surgically removed, your body will be in the process of replacing them before you are out from under the anesthesia.

That sounds pretty grim, but don’t give up. Belly fat can be eliminated. But eliminating belly fat is a two-step process. The first step is to lose weight, and the second step is to build abdominal muscle. Either step alone will not cause you to lose your belly fat. (And don’t believe it when anybody tells you that fat can be converted to muscle — the body doesn’t work like that.) You can lose fat and you can build muscle, but these are two separate processes.

There are two kinds of exercise: cardio exercise and muscle-building exercise. If you want to lose that belly fat, you are going to have to do both. Get on a weight loss diet, and then engage in both aerobic exercise to facilitate fat loss and weightlifting exercises to build muscle.

It depends upon the purpose of the fast. Sometimes people will fast for the purpose of gaining spiritual insight. Sometimes people will fast as a protest against injustice. There are also fasting diets that usually include a drink concocted of odd ingredients for the purpose of detoxification. I can’t say whether fasting under any of these circumstances is effective or not — I’ve never tried it, and I’m really not very likely to do so. I like to eat too much to NOT eat on purpose.

But the question of whether fasting does or does not work for the purpose of weight loss is pretty simple to answer: in a word, “NO.”

Many of the fad diets of the past (and even some that show up on the radar today) promote starting a weight loss diet by fasting or at least reducing the intake of nourishment to a very low starvation level.

Mostly the weight lost during a short fast is water only, but here’s what happens in the body during a fast:

During the first 12 to 15 hours of a fast, the liver will provide most of the glucose the body needs for survival. The liver maintains stores of glucose for this purpose. There’s no fat loss involved. Once these stores have been depleted, the body begins converting some of the amino acids in proteins in the body to energy, and this will cause an increase in nitrogen excretion in the urine. (No fat has yet been burned.)

After approximately two days, the body will begin to convert fat to fuel; but as it does so, it puts the entire body in survival mode so that less fuel is required by every system.

In the meantime, the body is sending urgent messages to the brain telling it that the body is in distress. The body is self-serving. The mission is always survival. So distress signals are sent to the brain. The brain receives these distress signals and sends out messages of its own, causing the stomach to feel discomfort and causing the appetite to increase.

The result is that when the fast ends, you’ll eat enough to regain whatever small amount of weight that has been lost. Fasting does not work for weight loss.

You’ve likely heard of Mediterranean diets that are supposed to be the very thing to help you lose the unwanted pounds you are packing around while allowing you to eat all kinds of good stuff during the process. It sounds like an excellent idea, doesn’t it?

Actually there is no such thing as one single “Mediterranean” diet. Lots of countries border on the Mediterranean Sea. And the diets of the people who live in those countries vary not only from country to country, but also from region to region within those countries.

So-called Mediterranean diets generally follow these rules:

* The main feature is a lot of fruits, vegetables, bread and other cereals, potatoes, beans, nuts, and seeds.

* Olive oil is the usual source of fat.

* Fish and poultry are the featured meats, and then only in small-size servings. Beef is almost never eaten.

* Eggs are rarely included.

* Only small amounts of wine are allowed.

So the question is, are Mediterranean-style diets healthy? Do they meat the guidelines set up by the American Heart Association, for example?

The answer to those questions is that the overall Mediterranean-style diet comes close to meeting American dietary standards — close, but not completely. Actually, a relatively large number of calories consumed on most Mediterranean diets are calories from fat. It’s important to note that obesity is a growing (pun intended) problem in all of the Mediterranean countries.

However, the average Mediterranean diet is far healthier than the average American diet, and lot less saturated fat is consumed. It is also important to note that the incidence of heart disease in Mediterranean countries is far lower than it is in the United States, as well.

Actually, more research needs to be conducted on Mediterranean diets before we’ll know for sure whether they are good or bad.

There’s been a lot of noise out there about flaxseed and how it affects those who are diabetic. There’s even a rumor floating around that flaxseed can CURE diabetes. Flax seed can’t cure diabetes, and neither can anything else. We keep hoping, but so far there IS no cure for diabetes.

There is evidence that flaxseed can lower blood glucose levels after it is taken after a meal, and that it also increases insulin levels. Additionally, flaxseed is loaded with alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential fatty acid that seems to be beneficial in preventing heart disease and related illnesses.

Flaxseed contains the right ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids, is high in fiber, and provides a phytoestrogen called lignan. Research shows that lignan may have antioxidant properties that protect against certain cancers.

There are some very interesting and even hopeful studies being conducted on flaxseed and how it might help diabetics. It can’t cure diabetes, but it is possible that it might delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes. We must wait for the results of studies to know what the answer is.

Meanwhile, it can’t hurt. Flaxseed is certainly a healthy alternative to candy and junk food. You must remember, however, to count the calories that the flaxseed contains in your daily calorie count.

It is important for diabetics to remember that flaxseed is high in calories. One tablespoon of flaxseed has 5 grams of fat and weighs about 1 gram. You need to take 40 to 50 grams of flaxseed, which is equal to about 4 tablespoons and has a total of 20 grams of fat, for it to have a positive effect. Calorie consideration is an important factor in the control of your glucose level.
